Ok, my son needs to gain muscle weight to help him with endurance. We are looking for the best protein supliment that will aid him in healthy growth and build him up so he does not run out of steam on long days of back to back tennis match competitions.
He is 5'10 and 135lbs of extreamly lean, lankey teenager.
Packing muscle isn't going to help with endurance. You have to build that up over time. Believe me, I know. Mine sucks big time!!
About the protein supplement, they're pretty much all the same, just different flavors and a few added ingredients. Stay away from the "weight gainer" stuff, it's just a ton of sugar and other carbs that you can get cheaper by buying actual food. When buying a protein supplement, one of the first things I look for is the amount of protein per scoop (not serving). Some will say they have 52 grams per serving with 2 scoops as a serving size and they're sitting right next to the one advertised as 26 grams per scoop. Look for the Amino Acid content (L-Leucine, L-Valine, L-Isoleucine) They should add up to be around 4.5 or 5 grams. If they don't, keep looking. Look for L-Glutamine to be 2.5 or higher. L-Glutamine aids in muscle recovery, so after a good tennis session, he can drink a protein shake with some fruit and get just the right nutrients he needs to nourish his muscles immediately.
Some good supps to aid in endurance are caffeine, vitamin B's (they'll help with energy levels).
Peanut butter is good too. When I work in the yard, all I eat is peanut butter. It's got a good fat source, some protein, carbs and is packed in a small enough serving size to help with energy without weighing you down. I would only use this strategy before or during a tough tennis session/match.
See, when the sport is more aerobic, your body burns more fats for energy than carbs. Proteins (aka amino acids, the building blocks of muscle) are what the body is going to resort to when carbs or fats are not avaialabe (based on anearobic/aerobic activity). This is what the terms muscle wasting and catabolic mean. Basicly, your body is eating itself because the appropriate nutrients aren't readily available. This is what hinders mosts exercise programs. Also, you've seen those skinny people with no muscle tone... BINGO!! Muscle wasting...
Let me know if you need any more info. I'll always be glad to help.

If he is anything like me not much will help. I was 5'11'' 135lbs in my senior year. I ate 4 to 5 times a day. I could eat a giant and a large pizza in one sitting. My body would not store more than it would use. It took 3 years in the army to put 20 lbs on.
I ran the mile BTW.
As long as I took in more than I burned, my weight did not drop and I had plenty of energy. Just couldn't put on weight.

my son turns 18 today and is heading off to college to wrestle next year, he is down to a slim 279 lbs at 6'4". After spending 6 years playing football and trying to pack on the size for football, he decided to wrestle his senior year for the first time and made it to state. Now he is trying to cut some of the weight (not alot tho, he is mostly muscle) and work more on his endurance also. The coach has him running with this funny parachute looking thing on to build endurance and quickness, has you son tried exercises like this for tennis?
He is working hard and mixing a lot of workouts to build up strength and endurance. I am stuffing him with food before and during matches and that is helping. Pasta, bananas, energy cubes, water all help, but he needs to build strength also.
SDB's is right, I don't want him on a weight gain mix. I have seen too many football players get screwed on that stuff and later get fat. He just needs a good protein mix so the muscles have more to build with.
Steel cut oats
Eggs
Tuna by the can
nuts
Whole wheat pasta
Brown rice
These are a great staple to add to his diet, very clean and great sources in protein and carbs

load up on some pb too. Its pretty simple, if you cant gain weight, you are not eating enough. Eating shitty food will make you look like shit. (skinny fat). tell him to eat a ton of the foods bosko listed, and he will start gaining weight in no time.

obviously. My first bulk consisted of beer and burritos.
my diet now consists of a sensible breakfast and lunch, and then I drink my dinner.
