Aiiight yah bastiges, it's time fer yer next installment.
And since I made ya wait a while, I brought the goods.
He came onboard shortly after me, lurk'd teh forums while pwning the contests, and finally eased on into a full-blown reg.
I've known him since my early days at Worth, and he's one of the coolest guys I've ever e-met.
So without further ado and other bullshit, here's the lowdown and background and all-around on one of the most talented choppers here, at Worth or anywhere else, my main man Pelican!
Standard Intro, give us the scoop on your username. Any special meaning, code and/or fetish? Worth1000 was where Pelican started. I wish there was something really interesting to say about it other than it was the first name I tried that worked. At first I wasn’t real comfortable with it. The place was a little intimidating. But I was this great chopper (I thought). I entered my first contest and took dead last in the Training Grounds. Buuuut, I had too much time on my hands back in those days and was entering a lot of contests. It didn’t take long to start winning some and the name became very easy to live with.
Recently someone asked here, if you’d ever googled your username? Google mine. On page 49 I found pelicanpoop.com and there was still no hint of me yet. LoL.
What do you do for a living? Nothing, at the moment. I’m in between jobs. Most of the jobs I’ve had revolved around art in one way or form. I’ve been a silversmith. I’ve made leaded glass windows for 30 years. I’ve designed and manufactured high temperature melting ovens for the art glass industry. Spent a few years as a woodcarver with my brother. Ran a couple of pr0n sites for a while, lol that was stupid. They’re gone now. I could probly pump gas if I tried and I was arrested in Casper WY for selling encyclopedias door to door in the rain. I would like to chop for a living but I gotta find a job doing that and everybody seems to want you to have a degree.
Married? Shacked up? Any kids? None of the above.
You joined Chopz in January ’07 after (like myself) a few years at Worth1000.com –what brought you here? The freedom to be able to do chopz like this for one thing.
It’s a little more real here. Laid back, no Davidian rule hovering overhead. Its delightfully less censored and you can let someone like Twiztedtony back on the internet. That kid was dead meat when he got here.
You’re definitely one of the heavyweight choppers, not only here but at Worth as well. What is your favorite chop of your own? By someone else? Links plz?
That’s a tough question. It’s like asking a musician their favorite tune they wrote. They’re always going to give you the wrong answer. John Lennon said, “In My Life”, cuz it was the first song he wrote 100% by himself. Leo Kottke said, “Ojo”, cuz it was the song he figured out how to fingerpick backwards on. At the same time though, musicians never get tired of playing their own music. I can enjoy looking at my work all day but when I do a tutorial, I do the whole chop over again.
So, what’s a favorite of mine? This one cuz it led to this, this and a host of others.
Who do I like? Lets just zero in on people I know and talk to. There’s ozplasmic, Hyperborean, followed by Deschain and HogHeaven . Last but certainly not least would be the wonderful danger_mouse.
Most really awesome chops are the result of a particularly twisted or humorous take on an everyday or commonplace object or scene - how do you come up with your ideas / where do you get inspiration from? Warm up the blood a little, but if ya wanna win, ya boil it up, brown and tasty!
We need to talk about source material here cuz I get most my ideas just by looking at it and searching for it. The contest theme is one thing, but if you don’t have source…well, you’re kinda fucked. If you don’t have killer source, you ain’t gonna win.
I never pass up a killer high rez picture. Sometime its just, Wow! Theres a great bucket in that pic or its full of useful textures, but I’m always looking for something choppable. I lost a bunch of my best and newest material in a drive failure a couple months ago and even though I still had tons of it elsewhere, I felt a little crippled.
Another thing is critiques. I remember about every mistake I’ve made in chopz from the past. I’ve gotten lots of pointers along the way and you just kinda pick things up.
Every chop is different. Some chopz just beat the crap out you no matter how good you are. Some are a labor of love and some just fall together in a few minutes. LoL, I love it though when I get a funny idea from it.
I don’t know what it is inside ‘me’ that makes them work. All I know is that the source material and the b-zillion critiques I’ve gotten are what I feed off of.
Cleveland Steamer, Rusty Trombone , or Alabama Hot Pocket? Alabama Hot Pocket is the only thing that even sounds appealing. What the fuk you talkin’ about, boy?
Favorite and/or least favorite member? Why? Too many favorites to list but I would like take this opportunity to say that I think Photochopz has some pretty classy ladies.
Favorite troll? Joshbond. I hope you mean that in general terms….
Any weaknesses/vices? Coffee, beer and cigarettes. That about covers it I think.
#1 reason yer not in jail or sleepin' under a bridge? In other words, to what do you attribute your position in life so far? Well, I’d been around the (proverbial) block about 10,000 times by the time I was 12, but what most people don’t know is that my mom was dragging me by my ear most of the time. Then, dad started taking me to work with him. That was a disaster for a while. I made him sorry of the day he was born to that mean old woman I had to call my Gramma. After a while though, we figured out, that his lecturing and my behaving like an adolescent idiot, wasn’t working. At all!! We came together on shit…we had to. His math, homework skills were too much to pass up.
My old man is great and my mother is a saint. That’s why I’m not homeless, and believe me, I could be. I’m not your best example of exemplary.
You get $1,000,000 cash in hand – keep it and you’ll be dead in 5 years, or give it back and be guaranteed to live at least 25 more years? I would go for the 25 years cuz there might be a better deal on the next million and I doubt that its going to come in the next five. Plus, life’s been good to me so far!
Any religious beliefs? I’m a moonie. Matter of fact, I dated the reverend’s wife before she married him. Bitch, I liked her. Guess I’m ‘not’ a moonie.
Favorite non–computer/interweb–related pastime? Mostly just artwork. I’m working on a process for getting glass sculptures made out of molds taken from live models. Its kinda slow moving here until I get the process down to something that works every time on a small scale. Then transferring it to larger scale projects. Earlier I put a link to my brother’s website, that’s the type sculpture that I’m going for, only in glass.
Top 3 favorite movies? I’m a sucker for visual display. Thats why I don’t watch TV. But I ‘dooo’ like movies!
Let’s put up 3 categories, Okay! Real movies: The Outlaw Josie Wales, Dune (David Lynch version) and Time Bandits B Movies: Femalien, Demonic Toys and the whole Subspecies series (Radu Rocks!!). Filthy Tripe: The Pigfarmer’s Daughter, Sassy Sue and Cheeky (Tinto Brass)!
Best/funniest moment on chopz? Who the fuck is Pelican? That thread cracked me up and you guys were great!
Credits or reps? Depends, I think reps are fine but sometimes like here in January, I’m contending for first place in MOM. So credits are good! In November, I was giving credits away right and left and still, thanks to a generous contribution from Thediceman, took 3rd. I don’t know. Reps are fine though.
What is something the good people of Chopz would be surprised to know about you? I started smoking 47 years ago.
I’m a poster child for the tobacco industry’s advertising skillz in the 50’s and 60’s.
Any regrets? Besides skyping JB when he was 4 Zimas deep on a Saturday night? No…..thats the only one.
(Like me) You've been doing this a long time. What do you look for when you're voting? Quality of the chop and, if you'll pardon the term, WOW POWER!.
A cut and paste will get you a 2 to 3 no matter how funny you think it is and I don't care how funny you think it is. If you post a crappy 5 min chop, I'm gonna piiyb but with my vote.
When I vote, I look for entries that aren't screwing around and are really showing some effort. I look for quality of sources, how well they blend and what you ultimately came up with. Is it a clean chop? Does it look real?
If you can make it funny cool and have Brian in it at the same time, more power to ya. Wildbill has done some nasty clean work with unlikely sources. Lols
Peli's final comment... Ganondorf? Why the fuck aren't you chopping???!!!???
I see what you got there..
Oooohh, nice call-out, old-school chopz style!
And I gotta agree, Gan's got some skillz he's holdin' out on
OK, there ya go.
Awesome interview, and thanks for the time and effort Peli.
I'm sure most everyone will appreciate the insight from a real heavyweight!
Stay tuned for another interview, and remember, women are for lovin' and horses are for ridin', and never the other way round. (Well, I guess ya might ride some women, but stay away from the horses ya perv bastids!)
Pelican is one of the members I would like to hang out with irl. Someone to drink with and bs about choppin. Great interview. 12 stars. I would of gave it a 12.5, but my name is no where to be seen.
Nicely done. It's refreshing to see someone with your skill that's still down to Earth. Intimidated by Worth1000 my ass, I often see "Theme Post by Pelican".
