I'm not exactly sure how to do that either. There are probably a lot of different ways it could be done.
Reps for a tutorial if someone can make one.

To start with, all 4 bg's are the same picture of a piece of fabric. Thats the swoop. Next, select each area and create a new layer. Fill it with color of choice and set the blend mode to either Multiply or Hard Light. That should give you an idea to start with.

that beats my old way of desaturating, then doing a hue/saturation mask and checking "colorize".

That was how I did it for a long time and it works quite well! Now that you mention it, desaturatating first would be a helpful step, for someone learning, in my technique as well. Hue/Saturation, Colorize is a bit limiting but it doesn't keep me from using it sometimes and like I said, it used to be one of my primary tools. It works!

after my last post, I found a textured photo, like a piece of crumped paper, and divided it up into four vertical zones and tried your little technique.

it felt faster. I found that if I had to go back and change colors, I just filled the layer and WHAPSHAW it was done, instead of playing with the hue/sat palette.

again, fanks for the tip.

Ok, after reviewing all the posts, I think I have it figured out. somewhat...

I found some great brushes that mimic the swooshing effect in the photo, i will attach if any wants them...

ok so first I've added 2 of those brushes to a plain white BG to gimmie this:

New create New Layer, Fill with color of your choice;
Right click the layer and select blending options> Multiply
and here is a red and blue of that.

it still doesnt have the characteristice of the orignal, but im getting closer.

I took this image:

and inverted it. Then using brighten & contrast, I did this to it:

Then I added a new color layer and filled with red to get this:

Then another new color layer filled with green for this:

Another color layer filled with blue:

That's the way I would do it. It is all I know.
