Creating Smoke in Photoshop!
Member Photoshop TutorialsPhotoshop Creating Smoke in Photoshop! in the forums; Does anyone even like this tutorial? Just wondering....
Yeh I do, enough to attempt at it last nt, got up to Step 3. Duplicate the newly merged layer. On the top layer, go to select/ modify/ contract. I choose 10 pixels. Then invert the selection, and delete. It should now leave a thinner version of what you had on the other layer. Then lower the opacity of the layer behind it....I got stuck there & tried to "wing it" but just didn't work...I'm just wondering wat it is I delete.
Yeh prob a blonde moment but I did play a bit to try to work it out myself.

Make sure to alt/click the layer to select it. It should create a selection around the smoke . Then modify contract. Then inverrt and delete.

Another great one. There is a much bigger sense of accomplishment in creating something from scratch than to using someone else's work in your projects. It may take a little longer at first, but once you get it down it starts to become automatic.
Learning to create effects like this teaches you to use the tools in Photoshop that may otherwise go untouched, simply because you don't understand how to apply them. Definitely worth an extra few minutes.
I've checked out a lot of smoke tutorials, but I really like the effect you got in your example. It's very wispy, quite more effective for being subtle than getting smacked across the face with a bunch of smoke that just looks like clouds. Reps
That smoke looks amazing, I tried it but for some reason I can't get the contract to do anything...what could I be doing wrong? I selected the layer with the Rec. Marquee...I tried alt/click but it doesn't work, I have PS 7.0
