Yeah, I like it. It's very helpful. Am wondering what would happen if you use gray instead of white so that you could move the smoke layer to an image that's lit, so that the smoke would look like it's coming out of a chimney or whatever. Will try that.

Thanks for the great how to! You explained it well in the least amount of steps. The end result is a great looking smoke and a very good, easily understood tutorial. Good job!

This works nicely for a single flame too (as if on a candle), with minor modifications. Use a yellow and a red-orange and work them on separate layers. Don't apply as much twist to them as this whispy smoke, and after you've combined the two layers add a layer under them and apply a yellow-orange radial gradiant to simulate light falling on the background. With careful placement and opacity, you can spill some of this candle light onto the main subject.

Thanks for the technique! Works like a charm! It's more versatile than you think.

Question of curiosity- it looks like your using a tablet.. as in the first couple steps, the smoke stars off with a thicker base, then tapers off at the top.

Will this still work if all I have is a standard 3-button mouse (and can't create the taper)? I have yet to give this a go as I'm still on campus and won't be home for several more hours.

Yes Im using a tablet. But you can set the "fade" in the brush settings which will still give it the taper using a mouse.
