Image inside text with photoshop

I've been using this effect for about a month now and I think it's pretty neat. Some may like it, some may not...either way I figured I would try to "contribute" to this forum! This is my first tut ever, so please be forgiving! lol And FYI I'm using CS2 on a Mac...

First of all, grab an image that you would like to be inside of your text. For this example, I'm using this:

Type the text on your image, and drag it over a section of the picture where you think it would look best. The color of the font doesn't matter, so use whatever you want to.

When you have the text set, CTRL+click on the text layer in the pallet (right click I believe for PC users), and select "Create Work Path."

When you do that, your text will look like this:

Then select your pen tool, CTRL+click (right click for PC) on the text that is on your image, and select "make selection." 0 feather radius for this tut only...obviously you can play around with it.

Once you have made your selection, delete the text layer from the layers pallet. Be sure that you DON'T deselect the outline selection. At this point, your image should look like this:

Now, go to New>Layer>Layer Via Copy. It should copy your background image into the outlined text. Your outlined text should disappear, now just hide your background image and you will see your text with the image inside.

You can play around with it and come up with some neat effects! Here's my final version:

Nice

One easy method to accomplish this effect is to place the shark image above your text layer and then right click on the shark image layer selecting "Create Clipping Mask".

This eliminates a few steps in the process and since it is non-destructive, you can move the text around the screen to adjust the view thru the text. You can then add additional effects such as the masks you show.

i thought about saying the same thing... that is one of the first things they taught us in class at the art institute...

you can also do this with any black shape... it doesn't have to be text.

also a shorter way of changing the overlaying image to clipping mask is to alt-click on the line between the two layers.

Can you explain that in more detail, would love a shorter process...

Simple.

Take a shape/ text or whatever and do nothing. Then take the image you want be visible only in the shape or text and place it over the text or shape. Move your mosue over to the Layer toolbar and choose, Create Clipping Mask.
