Yeah I like the pen tool too, clean edge and you can modify it as you go, before you actually commit to erasing your background. I've used lasso before, leaving just a little background around the edge and cleaning up with an eraser though, depends on what kind of look I want, and my mood at the time

Rotating can be done with Ctrl-T or by going into edit/transform/rotate.
