Photoshop Tutorial-how to place yourself in new settings

A member asked how they were to go about putting themselves in a different setting. Theres a couple different steps, and this is how I do it.

Step 1. Open both images in photoshop. With the lasso, select the area you want to transfer to the second image. (In this case, the golfer in the first pic) Either copy it and paste it onto the second image, or drag and drop it from one to the other. -

Step 2. Using crtl + T, resize the selection to make it the right size. Hit enter to make the changes.

Step 3. Using the eraser with a small, soft brush, start to erase around the sides. Do this around the whole selection (This step can also be done using the magnetic lasso. I find the lasso leaves hard rough areas, so I use the eraser, as it leaves softer edges. Its up to you.)

Almost done-just a couple more steps

Step 4. Using the regular lasso tool, go around the figure, deleting the rest of the background.

Step 5. Sometimes after deleting the background, it leaves a little background left, around the figure. You may need to go around and clean up the edges with an eraser.

This is what it should look like now.

To make it more realistic, you can add a shadow. To do this, simply duplicate the figure, rotate it and place it where you think the shadow should go. make it black by using brightness/contrast, and then give it a good blur (I use the gaussian blur). Set the shadow layer opacity to around 25-50 percent. There you go. Have fun!

Interesting, I do it alot different. I usually use the magnetic lasso around the first picture so none of the backround comes with it to begin with. This still requires clean up occasionally.

What your wrote about the shaddows is interesting. I usually make shadows with a different program, but it still revolves around the brightness/contrast manipulation. I'll have to try your method out.

The magnetic lasso sometimes takes the edges off your selection. If you look close up while you are using the magnetic lasso, sometimes you can see that its not selecting the edge at all, but selecting INTO the edge.
It takes more time using the eraser, but since I use a tablet, it makes a much smoother, clearer edge IMO.

Yeah, I usually go slowly and sometimes use the backspace button to undo something that didn't go right. I'm going to try your method, sounds faster.

cool tut.

pretty similar to how i do it actually, except i delete the background of the first image first, then paste it onto the second image. Same method for removing background(eraser) and shadow as i use.

very nice tutorial.
Thank you.

I never even though about doing a shadow that way, I always drew them freehand (with the mouse) and they always sucked.

Thanks!!!!!

I always just use eraser with a mouse, that tends too jerk and rip half the image apart, a lot of back tracking, i need a new mouse
Awesome tut, the shadows i use eyecandy, i have the 4000 and the latest they actually have some nice shadow detailing, worth a look if u can find it Its well done and i like the shadow, it probably would look better, ill give it a shot and ill try it with eyecandys filters and get back too yas
