- Use this image for a displacement map. See Tx’s excellent tutorial on Displacement Maps if you are unsure what they are and what they are for. You don’t need to use a displacement map however I find that the end result is a little better if you do use one.
- When masking use a nice soft brush. Your result will be smoother and look more natural.
- Mask out the Eyes, Hair, Background, Lips / Teeth, Eyebrows
- Drop the ‘layer opacity’ to about 60%. This will soften the effect of the whole skin texture.
Create a New Layer of Merged Layers and Insert Wound (Step 5):
- As I progress through the image I will ask you to create a new layer capturing the image exactly how you see it on the screen. You can see it in the work flow in the layers pallet. Here are the steps to do so;
- Select > Select All (Ctrl + A) - Edit > Copy Merged (Ctrl + Shift + C) - Edit > Paste (Ctrl + V)
- Make sure top layer is selected when you do this to insert the merged layer at the very top.
WE HAVE JUST USED THIS TEXTURE IN THE LAST IMAGE WITH BELOW HUE / SAT SETTINGS
- Insert the texture on a new layer above your image.
- Mask out around the wound. Be clean but not too fussy as we are going to burn around this area later on. Still take a little pride in what you are doing.
- After you have done this. Repeat the first part of Step 5 and create a new layer via the copy merged technique. Learn the shortcuts... I promise you’ll end up using it a bit.
Burning the Eyes / Prep Work for Texture Application (Step 7):
NOTE: Before burning I highly recommend you duplicate the layer as the burn tool is ‘destructive’ and this way you can mask out bits you don’t like or lower the opacity if you go crazy with the tool.
- Select the ‘burn tool’ and apply the following settings. Use Midtones and Exposure on about 12%. You will find these at the top of the screen...
- Use a soft brush
- You can use a faster flowing burn tool (Higher Exposure) but I prefer to work around 12%.
WE ARE GOING TO USE THIS TEXTURE IN THE NEXT STEP
Applying the Eyes Texture Part 1 (Step 8):
- Once you paste the wound picture into a new layer. Duplicate it so you have one for each eye.
- Transform (Ctrl + T) each layer until you are happy with each one covering an eye. I like to rotate them a bit so they aren’t exactly the same on both sides. It is entirely up to you.
- Merge the two layers together by right clicking the top layer and selecting merge down.
Applying the Eyes Texture Part 2 (Step 9):
- Insert the texture on a new layer above your image.
- Then mask out around the lips and make sure you do the teeth.
- After you have done this. Repeat the first part of Step 5 and create a new layer via the copy merged technique.
Applying Final Touches Part 1 - Vignette (Step 11):
- Now that we are this far we can see that the image is probably a little too light still. Here we will apply a vignette style darkening method. Vignetting is making the edges of an image darker than the middle.
- Create a new blank layer above your current one.
- Press ‘D’ to set your colour pallet to ‘default’ (Black and White). Make sure black is on top.
- Press Alt + Del to fill the new layer black.
- Lower layer opacity to around 45%
- Now we apply a mask and change the brush size and brush opacity (25%)
- Using a nice big brush like the one pictured lightly mask away a bit of the black over the face. This will bring focus on the subject and create a nicer ambiance for the theme.
Applying Final Touches Part 2 - Burning (Step 12):
- To finish off the image I’m going to use the burn tool again. I’m going to use the same settings as step 7 described. Remember to duplicate your image to reverse what you’ve done if you go overboard.
- I’m going to burn; lips, eyes, teeth, open wound on forehead and then focus on the cracks in the lips to bring them back a little.
Well that’s it for this tutorial. I know it’s big. I hope you like it and get plenty of use. These techniques can be applied in all sorts of images.
Cheers, Kewish.

I reckon i would have liked the pic more if the eyes were more visible though. Like pupiless bloodshot whites or severely reduced pupil size with no iris. Still looks good though.
I've been gone like a billion years, but it looks like i still need to spread.
