Kate and Gerry McCann could make £5million from a film deal over the story of their daughter's disappearance, it was claimed yesterday.
Representatives of the couple have begun negotiations with the world's largest talent and entertainment agency, IMG, over selling the film rights to their story.
They hope a lucrative deal would fund the search for Madeleine amid fears that the £1.2million raised from public donations will run out within months.
But critics warned the extraordinary move risked a public backlash against the couple - who are both still police suspects in the case - if they were perceived to be cashing in on the eight-month tragedy.
The McCanns, both 39, have turned down offers from big-name chat shows and television dramas in the past, as they were anxious to avoid being seen as celebrities.
But donations from well-wishers and supporters - which poured in after Madeleine went missing on May 3 - slowed to a trickle after they were named as police suspects in the investigation in September.
The McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell confirmed their representatives began talks with IMG last month, and said they would only consider "something done sensitively and considerately".
But the move was revealed as Portuguese police prepared to fly to Britain to oversee fresh interviews of the couple and the group of seven friends who were on holiday with them in Portugal when Madeleine vanished.
A publicist, who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the high-profile case, said: "It seems extraordinary to be negotiating film rights while they are still suspects in the investigation.
"It's a huge risk. They would make a lot of money - maybe more than a million, maybe even £5million if several bidders got involved - but they risk looking desperate.
"If they need the money for the fund, surely one of their wealthy backers could have stepped in and given more money?"
The McCanns, of Rothley, Leicestershire, set up the Find Madeleine fund in May to finance the ongoing search for their four-year-old daughter.
It has been used to fund the private detective agency they hired, Metodo 3, and to pay their living costs while they both took extended unpaid leave from their jobs.
But it hit controversy last year when it was revealed they had also used the public donations to pay two £2,000 instalments of the mortgage on their £500,000 house.
It is not used to pay for the legal costs of their team of defence lawyers, or to pay the £75,000 salary of their spokesman Mr Mitchell. Those costs are met by their wealthy benefactors, who include Sir Richard Branson and double glazing tycoon Brian Kennedy.
The directors of the fund - mostly friends and colleagues of the McCanns - control how the money is used. They are due to meet today and are expected to discuss the film deal proposal.
If the deal goes ahead with IMG, it would involve the same team that made Touching The Void, the award-winning drama-documentary about two British mountaineers' real-life fight for survival.
Touching The Void mixed interviews with the real mountaineers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, talking about their horrific battle for survival and dramatic reconstructions of events, using actors.
A film about the McCanns' search for their daughter could use a similar format, but only if Mr and Mrs McCann were formally cleared as suspects.
While they remain arguidos they are banned from speaking publicly about the events of May 3 and the police investigation.
A spokesman for Darlow Smithson Productions, which made Touching The Void, said: "Darlow Smithson had a preliminary meeting with representatives of the McCanns about the possibility of an observational documentary following the ongoing search for Madeleine.
"Discussions are still at a very early stage and the issue of money has never been raised."
Touching The Void earned £7million at the box office and won best British film at the 2004 Baftas. It told the true story of Joe Simpson and Simon Yates' near fatal attempt to climb a mountain in the Peruvian Andes.
A film of the McCanns' ordeal in Portugal, as they campaigned for Madeleine's return but then found themselves under suspicion, could follow a similar format.
The company has sent Mr and Mrs McCann a tape to show them how they would treat their story.
Mr Mitchell said: "We have had a preliminary meeting with some producers and directors from IMG with a view to discussing an idea for a film.
"We've not agreed anything, we're not about to sign anything. We like the proposal, we thought it was fair, but there are others."
He added: "It would be commercially naive if we did not ask for a donation to the Madeleine fund. We would be giving up the rights to a lot of money which could help to find her.
"Any money raised that way would go to the fund, which Kate and Gerry do not control. This is not about personal gain for them.
"Madeleine's Fund is spent on investigators and advertising. It's dwindling. The money is going. I would imagine we've got a few months left. It's not going to last the year unless we get more money in."
The spokesman said the McCanns would only agree to a film deal if they believed it would help raise awareness of the case, or help to fund the search.
Mr Mitchell said a book deal was also being considered "at some point down the line" as part of the effort to find Madeleine.

Publicist Mark Borkowski said: "By now they must have had hundreds of offers for their story, and it is a very clever and organised way for them to keep the issue in the public eye. Some of the offers may well be for six-figures.
"Starting the New Year with a story like this does risk a backlash, but there is a huge amount of public sympathy for them out there. People do feel they are justified in doing whatever they can to keep their campaign going."
Mr Mitchell said Mr and Mrs McCann could not get involved in anything personally until their status as suspects in the Portuguese police investigation was lifted.
Mr Mitchell confirmed reports that one of the directors of the fund, former GMTV presenter Esther McVey, had resigned from the board, but denied it was because of any rift with the McCanns.
He said she wanted to concentrate on her role as a Conservative parliamentary candidate and was also about to start studying for a demanding MBA qualification.
"She has a lot of commitments and realised she could not devote the time she wanted to the fund," he said.
"She felt the New Year would be a good time for the change, and spoke to Kate about her decision.
"Kate and Gerry were disappointed but they both understood her reasons. She is an old friend of Kate's and continues to support the fund."
Mr Mitchell said other directors might also want to "rotate" their position on the board, as it had created a lot more work than was originally anticipated in May.
The fund, officially titled Madeleine's Fund: Leaving No Stone Unturned, was set up as a not-for-profit business as it did not qualify for charity status.
The couple have been warned they could face a protracted legal battle to clear their names, and could even be forced to take the case to the European Court of Human Rights.
There have been cases in Portugal of suspects remaining arguidos for more than seven years, and the country's strict secrecy laws mean they cannot speak about their ordeal until they are cleared of suspicion.
Mr and Mrs McCann insist Madeleine was abducted from their holiday apartment in Praia da Luz as they ate with seven friends at a nearby tapas restaurant, and that she could still be alive.
But police in Portugal suspect she died in the apartment that night, while in her parents' care, and that they hid her body and staged her abduction to cover up the death.
Detectives have filed legal requests, demanding that British police re-interview the friends who were with them and seize various items from the McCanns, including Mrs McCann's diary.
The couple are also expected to face fresh interrogations once their friends have been quizzed over alleged contradictions in their witness statements.
The legal papers have been filed with Eurojust, the Europe-wide body which links different member states' justice departments, and would need to be rubber-stamped by Home Secretary Jacqui Smith before they could be forwarded to Leicestershire Police.
The Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Noticias said the documents set out the questions that detectives wanted answered, and said the move meant the police investigation had entered its "final phase".
Leaks from inside the investigation have suggested that police believe they have enough evidence to charge Madeleine's parents, possibly with "accidental homicide", hiding a body or faking a crime.
A friend of the family said: "Kate and Gerry are desperate for the case against them to be dropped, they just want the Portuguese police to see sense.
"They are frustrated at how slow the legal process has been and want it resolved as quickly as possible.
"Naturally the McCanns are concerned that if this line of inquiry continues to its natural conclusion, charges are always a possibility and they know that's entirely wrong.
"All of this is a complete distraction from what should be going on and that is finding Madeleine."
Mr Mitchell said: "Gerry and Kate have always said they are more than happy to be reinterviewed by the police, they have nothing to hide, they are innocent."
Jonathan Dean, of the magazine Total Film, said he believed the film rights could go for up to £2million but said it would be an unprecedented deal.
He said: "This hasn't happened like this before, so soon after the events in question."

Well, I can't comment on the chopz, as a mom myself, I would feel like my heart was ripped out if my child ever went missing! And to make light of it, just kinda seems wrong for me to do. (that is, I couldn't do it, I am not commenting on or slamming anyone who does the chopz)
