i use airbrush and the smudge tool
sometimes i use the warp tool

I don't know gimp too well but if you can select areas that you have smudged and add some noise to them it makes a lot of difference. And careful with that smudge tool. You can loose definition.

Perhaps a spatter setting with your airbrush using specific skin tones.
