I think the former inspire a little more creativity, while the latter are easier for novices to jump into without too much PS prowess. If you're running just one contest a week then alternating between themed and sourced is a great idea.

How about a themed contest to design a Google logo for "International Photochopz Day"?

How about chopping an advert/box art for a video game?
Either create a sequel you'd like to see or alter an existing game.

Maybe an animation contest would be good?
There are a few members (such as Arsonist, and I think TypeO and TX51210 but my memory has been toked away) that have made some pretty cool gifs.

It might need a longer deadline though, to give people more time to create them.

I second the animation contest idea. A function (avatar, smiley, etc) and size limit should be applied IMO so a simple bouncing smiley isn't in the same contest with an animated wallpaper or flash design.

a displaced animals contest where you put an animal in an environment that you woundn't normally find it in. Here is an example I did.



I didn't see this theme in any of our previous contests so it might be new for some of the members.
