I like using the polygonal lasso more than the magnetic lasso, the magnetic lasso messes up sometimes and selects the wrong thing. The polygonal lasso is kinda a pain, but you get more control of it

the magnetic lasso will give you bad aliased edges if you're using animage that had a lot of jpeg compression on it. Sometimes it's a good idea to go back and touch things up with some other selection tool.
