Pen tool problem

On 3rd and 4th picture down!
I make pen tool part and then it says click it and do gradient, when i apply gradient it does gradient on whole pic and not pen tool selection!

Cant figure what Im doin wrong?

when you go to create the gradient, you're double-clicking on the new layer, right? not the original layer? There should be two layers at that point: the original and the second layer that was created when you started using the pen tool.

Does pen tool automatically create new layer? No?

So i must create new layer, then do pen tool? Is that it?

in the pen tool options (on the little toolbar up top), make sure you have "shape layers" selected. You may have to mouse over the little buttons to see which one it is.

Or you could create a new layer before or after you create the pen tool shape then with the new (blank) layer selected, click on the "Paths" pallet...then "apple + click" the path and it will make a selection of the path you just made. Do your gradient like normal from that point.
