If your using CS-3 then you don't have to hate the pen tool use quick selection tool.
I'll create a tutorial for pen tool, how to use it efficiently. So don't worry about that.

Do you know the magic wand tool? Right click or click & hold that icon and choose the quick selection tool.
Here's my mini tut for the pen tool:
Basically, the pen tool makes things called paths. These paths are made up of anchor points and handles. When making a path, when you click it makes an anchor point. Click again and it'll make another anchor point, connected to the previous one with a path. If you click and drag, you'll be dragging the handles on the anchor point, which will curve that path.
A path itself is not a visible line of pixels that will show up if you print, but you can stroke it and fill it. They are infinitely resizeable and the quality will not degrade when you make them bigger (Look up vectors) because it resamples new pixels that will follow/fill the path.
Once you've made a path, and closed it off by clicking the original point, you can right click inside the path and choose "Make selection" to make a selection out of your path. You can then click the New layer mask button (In your layers pallette) to isolate your selection. You could then go into the layer mask to add more to your selection if you deleted too much, or take off even more simply by painting black (Hide) or white (Reveal)
You could also invert the selection then delete, but that is destructive and you are stuck with what you have instead of being able to recover parts.
Some tips for using the pen tool:
-If you want to go from a curved line to a straight one, or want to change directions, make your curved line then alt+Click the anchor point you made.
-If you are making a path around a circle, you can only go 1/4 of the way at a time
-Practice! It is a bit easier if you alt+click all of your anchor points, but you don't have to. If you practice you can predict how the next path's curve will go (They follow the handle of the previous point)
Pen tool is a pain to learn but once mastered is almost indispensable Has taken me several weeks to get even halfway good with it but i can see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

I use it for exacto precision selecting. Really sharp lines and no ridges, unlike the eraser or selection tool.
Especially if you use an optical mouse

The pen tool isn't just for vector graphics, it's awesome for selecting stuff. It's much better than the lassos for precise stuff, the freeform lasso is better for selecting a general shape (ie. to make smoke or clouds)
It has more uses though, typing on paths is useful and of course stroking it with custom brushes (To make hair and things) is useful. Anything you do with the brush, where you want a smooth curved line can be done with the pen and strokes.
