all she did on that xmen one was create a mask and used a gradient to blend it. Quite simple and easy to do.

well maybe it just looks really good to me because i cant do squat with photoshop.

open up a pic in photoshop. Put another pic on a new layer, create a mask, and then grab the gradient tool, and drag it across the top layer.
