Displacement map?

What are they, how are they made, and what are they used for? I would love to know this info.

You use any image saved as a photoshop document for the displacement map. It is used to bend images (or actually the pixels) around the displacement map with more bend in dark areas of the map. An example is an image of a flag. this is kind of extreme but
original

displacement (saved as a .psd)

Result

You will need to mess with settings so you do not get the edges screwed up like this one did

the best way to avoid sharp edges is to use the blur tool on your image map where it changes from light to dark
