Coloring technique?

My friend gave me an image that she would like to have colored. For some reason she took the image black n white (dunno why) and she asked me to color the dog red.

I tried making it simple by adding a new layer and setting the blending mode to color and had a few questions. How can I go about possibly removing the shadows from the dog or simply using a technique that wont make the shadows come out to red when colored.

My 2nd question is why can't I select the color black to color the nose, paws and eyes. I mean I can select it but when I try painting it it does not paint over it.

Here's an example of what I am talking about it's not done carefully by any means just wanted to show u guys what I am referring to

try to use a hue/saturation adjustemnt layer first ad use the settings you like, the pres Ctrl+I (Invert) and then on the layer mask try to paint white on the dog to reveal the color

use the layer mask and choose solid color overlay then select overlay for the layer blend. on the washed out color like the sky you'll have to use a different blend mode. in this example I used darken, I used the same for the yellow. I left the tips of the paws so you could see the difference with the color overlay

Thanks! So I messed with the contrast first then began the coloring. I couldn't figure out how to color in black for some reason when I do it it removes the color instead.

So for the eyebrows nose n paw I tried adding another layer brushed it with black and jusst lowered the opacity.

Not the best but this shall do

Good work Fernie.

They just look a little over saturated to me and the contrast isn't doing the image any favours so I thought I'd try my hand at this.

I hope you like!
