New hd installed. Slave drive not working.

Ok so my hard drive, IDE, was getting full. I bought a 500gig SATA, loaded windows, and made it my primary. I want to use the original as a slave drive and copy files over to the new drive before reformatting it.
I put the jumper on slave but when i try to access that drive windows says it isn't formatted.
I dont want to burn all that crap to cd.
What did I do wrong? Do I need a different ribbon cable to run it as a slave drive?

nah just keep unplugging and re-plugging and re-setting i had the same problem

I had that problem but in reverse.... Your way should work fo sure.

I haven't f'd with it yet. I'll try it when I have an hour or more just in case it takes a while.
Seems like something is either always happening or is about to.

Finally got it to work. I changed the jumper on the IDE drive to Cable Select. Worked first time.
