Adobe Illustrator,Corel Draw etc

Okay heres the problem,my sisters studying fashion design and she wants me to help her learn corel draw version x3 which she bought yesterday,point is all i know about corel draw is that its a vector editing software,this is also pretty much the problem with illustrator, now im the quicker learner of the 2 of us and i want to help her but i need to understand these programs and what they do first,ive studied up on vector images etc online and over here too and i get that these basically make stuff that take up less space and can be scaled without loss of quality,what i want to know is what the limitations of vector editing programs are,WTH do you do with them and how do they match up against bitmap editing progs like photoshop etc?WITH EXAMPLES if its possible okay guys! explain it to me like you would a complete and total newb cause thats what i am with vectors!
The help is really appreciated in advance!

and sorry, i dont really have an answer for your question, but i would like to see the answer also....i know enough about illustrator to make 3D typing and thats about it

Basic Definition

My understanding is that they're used mainly for printing purposes - the scalability makes for loss-less resizing of logos, blueprints and such.

Compared to Photoshop etc, it allows the creation of shapes that are scalable without pixelization or jagged edges.

There's a lot more to it than that, but I'm no expert on that shit.

i got that and i had read that before but what i really want to know are its limitations , gimme something like you can make "x" in photoshop but not in corel draw , and vice versa.

omg yes...id love to know the diffrence also cuz im fucking stupid when it comes to illistrator...my professor tryied to explain it to me and i sware i just got up and walked out cuz she bored the crap out of me

You work with lines and geometric shapes and edit the fills for these objects to produce graphics. Since they are not pixel based graphics, they resize without loss. You can now combine pixel based grapics with illustrator files so you have a file that actually contains both types of images. Illustrator is great for producing smooth lines and gradients that you can bend and warp similar to the pen tool based graphics in photoshop but illustrator has many more tools for this type of artwork just as photoshop has more tools for editing pixel based artwork.
