Your well on your way. If you still have the PSD of this file, try using a quickmask with a soft brush around your face to help settle it into the background. Then go to the shadow/highlight adjustment, move the shadow slider all the to the right, then gradually move the highlight to the left until the glare goes away. If it messes up the color too muc, you can aways desaturate it, then make a color adjustment layer with whatever skin tone you like.
